About Us

Situated on the B1145, 3 miles east of King's Lynn, The Sandboy was built in 1908, originally tending to the needs of the railway, quarry and locals. Gayton Road station closed to passengers on 28th February 1959 when most of the M&GN network closed. Shortly after closure, the line was singled through the station and the signalling was removed. Freight services continued until 1968 and the track was lifted in 1970. The station buildings were finally demolished, along with the bridge in the early 1970s when the B1145 was realigned.

Since then The Sandboy has been a hub of activity, supplying locals with a friendly, charming place to relax with family and friends. With Mintlyn Crematorium close by, The Sandboy has always taken pride in

providing a place for those to reminisce and celebrate the lives of their loved lost ones.

The Sandboy is close to King's Lynn and the popular destinations of Sandringham and Bawsey Country Park which was originally created by sand quarrying operations. Covering over 180 acres including lush woodland and sparkling lakes, Bawsey Country Park is the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Visit with family or friends and get closer to nature, as you explore the many pathways through the trees, and around the lakes, finishing up at The Sandboy for a cold or warming drink.

"As happy as a Sandboy" -  In fact, the term sandboy refers to those who delivered sand to public houses, theatres and homes in the 18th and 19th centuries. Publicans used to spread sand on bar floors to catch slops, spills, spit and so on, and the sand was delivered by sandboys. Hauling sand was thirsty work, and they were partly paid in drink for their efforts. They were indeed happy.

The Sandboy is located on the B1145 between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Gayton.
